The LASIK Recovery Process: Taking Care of Your Eyes Post-Surgery

Undergoing LASIK laser eye surgery is an exciting milestone in life for anyone looking to enjoy clear vision without the hassle of glasses or contact lenses. However, proper post-surgery care is crucial to ensure a smooth, rapid recovery and optimal results. Here’s a guide to what you can expect during your LASIK recovery and the steps you should take to care for your eyes after the procedure.

What to Expect During LASIK Recovery

The First 24 Hours
Immediately after LASIK surgery, you may notice that your vision is clearer, though it may still be slightly hazy or blurry. It will gradually improve hour by hour. It’s common to experience some mild discomfort, such as itchiness, heaviness, burning sensation or gritty sensation in the eyes. During this time, rest is key. Avoid activities that may cause your eyes to dry out, such as reading or using screens, and follow our instructions including the use of protective eyewear overnight.

The First Week
In the first days following your surgery, you can return to most normal activities, but it’s important to protect and be more mindful of your eyes. You can usually carry out your routine activities, such as light exercise, computer work, driving, but with moderation and frequent breaks. Fluctuations in vision are normal, and you may notice sensitivity to light or glare, especially at night. You will be prescribed antibiotic and anti-inflammatory steroid eye drops to prevent infection and reduce swelling; in addition to lubricant drops (artificial tears), these are vital to your recovery, so make sure to use them as directed.

The First Month
During the first month, your vision will continue to improve and stabilise, with gradual improvements as your cornea heals. The quality of your vision, such as contrast and colour appreciation, will also gradually improve. It’s important to avoid rubbing your eyes, swimming, or engaging in heavy lifting or strenuous activities that could affect the healing process or put you at risk of an injury. It is important to use artificial tears (lubricant drops) at least 4 to 6 times a day to support the eyes during their healing.

Tips for a Smooth LASIK Laser Surgery Recovery

    1. Protect Your Eyes

Use the protective shields provided, especially while sleeping the first 3-4 days, to prevent accidental rubbing or pressure on your eyes. When outdoors, wear sunglasses to shield your eyes from UV rays and bright light, which can cause discomfort during the initial healing process. Regular and frequent use of lubricant drops will also protect your eyes.

    1. Follow Your Medication Plan

Your prescribed eye drops are essential for preventing infection and inflammation that may delay your healing. Set reminders to ensure you use them consistently, and always wash your hands before applying drops.

    1. Avoid Certain Activities

Steer clear of swimming pools, hot tubs, and saunas for at least three weeks, as these environments will cause dryness of the eyes and can increase the risk of infection. Refrain from wearing eye makeup during this time, especially mascara and eyeliner, as it can irritate your eyes.

    1. Limit Screen Time

While it may be essential to use your phone or computer, prolonged screen time can exacerbate dryness and strain. Follow the 20-20-20 rule: every 20 minutes, take a 20-second break and look at something 20 feet away to give your eyes a rest. In the first few months it would be beneficial to use a lubricant drop during these breaks.

  1. Stay Hydrated and Rested

Hydration plays a big role in recovery. Drinking plenty of water supports the healing process, while getting enough sleep allows your body and eyes to repair and rejuvenate.
