If you lead an active lifestyle, you know how frustrating glasses and contact lenses can be. Whether you’re cycling through country roads, climbing crags, or running across the South Downs, the last thing you want to worry about is fogged-up glasses, lost lenses, or dry, irritated eyes.
Laser eye surgery is the treatment of choice for active outdoor individuals who want reliable, clear vision that keeps up with their pace without the hassle of visual aids.
Why Athletes and Adventurers Choose Laser Eye Surgery
As someone who works closely with professionals and people who love the outdoors, I often hear the same reasons for seeking laser eye surgery:
- Glasses slip, fog up, or break during training or races
- Contact lenses dry out in windy or cold conditions
- Wearing protective gear like helmets or goggles becomes difficult
- Limited choice of sunglasses
Laser vision correction eliminates these barriers, giving you confidence and clarity wherever your training takes you.
Which Procedures Suit an Active Lifestyle?
At ClarisVision, we offer several types of laser eye surgery that suit different needs, including:
ReLEx SMILE (Small Incision Lenticule Extraction)
This is a popular choice for active individuals. It’s minimally invasive, does not involve creating a flap, and the cornea remains structurally intact. Recovery is rapid, with return to normal activities within 24 to 48 hours, and discomfort is minimal. Perfect for runners, cyclists, and contact sports players.
LASIK
Our most commonly performed procedure. LASIK provides fast visual recovery, with most patients being back to their routines within 24 to 48 hours. This is the treatment of choice if you are struggling with your near vision, as PRESBYOND LASIK corrects both distance and near vision issues. However, if you wish to return soon to sporting activities that may involve risk of eye trauma (like rugby or martial arts), we may recommend an alternative.
LASEK / ASA
Surface-based treatments that don’t involve a corneal flap. These are ideal for those with thinner corneas, abnormally shaped corneas or those involved in impact sports. Recovery is slower than SMILE or LASIK, but results are just as good long-term.
When Can I Resume My Training After Laser Eye Surgery?
Recovery times vary, but here’s a general guide:
- SMILE or LASIK: Light activity (e.g. walking, gym, spinning) after 2 to 3 days. More intense training after 1 week.
- LASEK / ASA: Expect 5 to 7 days of downtime before resuming light activities. Full recovery may take 2 to 4 weeks.
I always recommend wearing sunglasses or protective eyewear during outdoor recovery, especially the first week, and following all post-op advice closely.
Can I Swim, Surf or Climb After Laser Surgery?
Yes, but timing matters. Water sports and climbing require extra caution:
- Avoid swimming, surfing, diving and saunas for at least 2 to 3 weeks post-surgery.
- Climbing and contact sports should be avoided for at least 2 weeks, or until your surgeon gives you the go-ahead.
- Always protect your eyes from dust, wind, and UV during the healing phase.
Everyday Wins Beyond Sport
Beyond sport, most patients tell me they feel a deeper sense of ease in daily life:
- No more packing spare lenses or glasses for holidays or long runs
- No more worrying about dry eyes in air-conditioned gyms or worrying about showering and swimming with contact lenses
- No more discomfort wearing helmets, ski goggles or sunglasses
Clear vision becomes one less thing to manage, so you can stay present, focused, and connected to what you love.
