The LASIK Recovery Timeline: What to Expect Day by Day

By Mr Aris Konstantopoulos, Consultant Ophthalmologist & Corneal Specialist

One of the most common questions I’m asked during consultations is, “How long will it take for my eyes to heal after LASIK?” The good news is, LASIK is a quick, comfortable procedure with a remarkably short recovery period. There is no other surgical procedure with such a rapid recovery.

Still, it’s completely natural to want to know what each stage will feel like and how to care for your eyes as they heal.

Here’s a clear, day-by-day breakdown of what you can typically expect after your LASIK laser eye surgery.

Day 0: The Day of Your LASIK Surgery

The procedure itself only takes around 15-20 minutes, and most patients are surprised by how painless and efficient it is. Your eyes will be numbed with anaesthetic drops and held open with a speculum so you cannot blink. We will talk to you during the procedure and guide you through each step gently and clearly.

After surgery:

  • Your vision will be blurry or hazy and will improve hour by hour
  • You may feel a gritty sensation or mild discomfort
  • Sensitivity to light is common
  • Rest is essential for the remainder of the day

We recommend going home and keeping your eyes closed for an hour or two. Avoid screens and bright lights, and wear the protective shields provided to prevent rubbing your eyes in your sleep.

Day 1-2: First Post-Op Check & Rapid Vision Improvement

By the next morning, most patients already notice significant improvement in clarity. Your eyes may still feel a little dry or sensitive, but it’s manageable.

At your check-up:

  • We’ll assess healing with no infection and ensure everything is progressing well
  • We will answer any questions you may have
  • You’ll be reminded to use your antibiotic and anti-inflammatory drops as prescribed
  • Many patients return to work or light daily activities on this day

Avoid swimming, eye makeup, and dusty or smoky environments.

Days 2–7: Settling In

Over the first week, you’ll notice:

  • Fluctuations in vision (this is normal)
  • Continued improvement in contrast and sharpness
  • Occasional dryness, especially after screen use

Things to avoid:

  • Rubbing your eyes
  • Hot tubs or pools
  • Heavy exercise or contact sports
  • Eye makeup (including mascara and eyeliner)

You may resume wearing eye makeup from day 7 onwards, but we recommend using new, clean products to minimise any risk of infection. Always remove makeup gently and avoid touching the eyes directly.

At this stage, artificial tears (lubricating eye drops) are your best friend. Use them regularly, especially if you’re working at a computer. We also recommend taking regular breaks every 20 minutes, using the 20-20-20 rule.

Protecting Your Eyes During Recovery

Throughout your recovery, it’s important to protect your eyes from irritation and injury:

  • Wear sunglasses outdoors to shield your eyes from UV light
  • Use protective eye shields at night during the first few days
  • Avoid windy or dusty environments
  • Stay away from smoky settings that may cause dryness, irritation or eye rubbing

These simple steps support healing and reduce the risk of complications.

Week 2–4: Vision Stabilises

Most patients reach 95% of their final vision during this window.

You will:

  • Be fully back to work and exercise
  • Drive comfortably at night
  • Feel your eyes becoming less dry and the fluctuations in vision diminishing or stopping

If you experience glare or haloes in low-light conditions, these typically improve over time.

Month 1–3: Routine and Confidence

By this point:

  • Most vision fluctuations have resolved
  • The cornea continues to refine and heal at microscopic level
  • Your lubricating drops may be tapered or stopped as advised

You’ll be invited for follow-up appointments to ensure everything remains on track.

Many patients tell us that by this stage, they no longer think about their eyes at all — the greatest compliment to a successful LASIK procedure.

Beyond 3 Months: Long-Term Clarity

At ClarisVision, we continue to monitor your results and remain available for questions long after your surgery.
